Sleet moves out, roads now the major concern

Posted: Updated:

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says it has responded to nearly 200 wrecks in Mecklenburg County alone as sleet and freezing rain moved through the area.

Crews will work overnight salting roads and will switch shifts at 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

Just after 11 a.m., a Winter Storm Warning was issued for Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Avery, and Mitchell counties. The Warning is in effect through 11 p.m. Friday.

The rest of the viewing area is under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Snow and sleet began falling in Charlotte shortly after 8:00 a.m. It continued on and off through the morning hours.

By 11:30 a.m. Medic said it had already seen a measurable impact on call volume. In just three hours, Medics responded to 17 accidents.

As of 7 p.m., Medic said crews had responded to 81 accidents, transporting 29 people to area hospitals. Two patients had very serious injuries, and two others had serious injuries.

For perspective, Medic says its crews usually respond to 24 accidents in a 24-hour period. Medic crews are reporting slick spots developing on roads throughout the county.

By 3:15 p.m. on Friday, troopers say they had worked at least 160 wrecks on Friday, with another 20 investigations still pending.

The main line of winter precipitation is still expected to impact Mecklenburg County in the afternoon.

De-icers were called in at the Charlotte-Douglas International airport in an effort to keep planes in flying condition.

If you will be traveling on the roads today, slow down and give yourself plenty of extra time.  Black ice could form, especially on exposed areas such as bridges and overpasses.

Pedestrians should also be cautious of ice on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots. Historically, Medic says it responds to more fall injury calls than car wrecks during winter weather.
