CHESTER COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -
An investigation is underway after the newly-elected Chester County Sheriff says someone came to his home and poisoned his dog.
Sheriff Alex Underwood talked to WBTV on Wednesday and says his 19-month-old German Sheppard was poisoned on Sunday.
Underwood was sworn into office as Chester County's first black Sheriff just two weeks ago.
The Sheriff says he went to the Martin Luther King, Junior parade on Sunday. When he came home, he found his dog, AJ, who appeared to be sick. By Monday morning his dog was dead.
He says someone laced meat with poison and fed it to the dog while the family was at the parade in Chester.
"I don't think anybody actually drove down into the driveway but I think they came into the gate and gave it to him," Underwood said. "To me that's a cowardly act, and to be honest with you - I'd much rather they come deal with me."
Sheriff Underwood doesn't mince his words when it comes to who he thinks killed his dog.
"These what we call 'the good old boys' around here," he said. "They not men, they cowards and I'll tell any of them."
Underwood says he knows who's behind the dirty deed. And his answer as to why, points straight to politics.
"There's a small group of people here in Chester County that think they run everything the way they want it to be run and for who they want it to be run for. And those days are over."
The Sheriff says, just like any other crime, this one is being investigated too.
In the meantime, he has another reminder for the group he says is responsible.
"We're gonna enforce the law, the law's made for everybody not a certain few. We're gonna treat people as nice as they let us and as mean as they make us."
The sheriff says AJ was in training to join the department's K-9 unit.
If you have information about this case, call the Chester County Sheriff's Office.
