A fugitive who escaped from a federal prison in Miami was arrested in Charlotte.
Ruben Zenen Alzamora escaped January 14, 1997 while serving a 168-month sentence for cocaine distribution.
Fifteen years later, the Western North Carolina U.S. Marshals Service "Violent Offender Task Force" tracked Alzamora to the 100 block of Oak Creek Drive in Charlotte.
Alzamora is being held without bond in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
The Violent Offender Task Force is a fugitive apprehension team, made up of officers from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service in Charlotte.
Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the apprehension of approximately 34,000 federal fugitives. More federal fugitives are arrested by Marshals than all other federal agencies combined.
