PSI Thursday: Prescription for Confusion

MORGANTON, NC (WBTV) - Richard Garrison couldn't make sense of it. A hospital bill for his mother topped $9000.

"My mom was there less than two hours," said Garrison.

The itemized bill reads like a grocery store receipt written in another language. It's long, filled with all kinds of charges and it's awfully hard to understand.

"The system that we have tends to make it more difficult than it should be," said Dr. Michael Matthews.

Matthews teaches Health Care Management at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.

"There are more billing errors than there should be and only the consumer will catch them," said Matthews.

How do you catch them? How do you make a case for a lower bill and avoid a "Prescription for Confusion?" Watch our Problem Solver Investigation Thursday night on WBTV News at 11:00.
