Several cars destroyed in overnight body shop fire

ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) -

Several people who dropped off their cars for repair at a local body shop may have nothing to pick up after a fire destroyed seven vehicles overnight.

Both volunteer fire crews as well as city firefighters raced to a reported structure fire at Burns Chevrolet on Cherry Road early Monday morning.

Officials said the body shop had caught fire with seven cars inside.

Crews dropped hose lines, and battled the flames.  It took the better part of a half an hour to get the situation under control.

They were able to save the building, but most of the contents were a total loss.

That included most of the seven cars, one of which appeared to be a police cruiser.

Fire investigators went to work trying to figure out why the flames started.  While the answer is still unknown, they do say they know how much it's going to cost to repair all of this.

Crews estimate the damage will cost $150,000 to fix.

Firefighters said the timing of the fire is a double-edged sword.  On one hand, since it was so early in the morning, no one was at the body shop, so no one was hurt.

On the other hand somebody who was there may have been able to alert firefighters faster.
