Inauguration weekend kicked off Saturday with a National Day of Service, which is an annual part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

President Obama and Vice President Biden both participated in service events with their families.

President Obama began the weekend of his second inauguration staining shelves at Burrville Elementary school in Washington, which was his project for the National Day of Service.

During his project he said,  "This is really what America's about. This is what we celebrate. This inauguration, we're going to be...it's a symbol of how our democracy works and how we peacefully transfer power. But it should also be an affirmation that we're all in this together."

Meanwhile, the Vice President and his wife got to work at the National Guard Armory by filling care kits for deployed troops.

Biden was also joined by his children and grandchildren and called the day a "family affair."

The celebration at the National Mall featured celebrity guests such as; Eva Longoria, and musical performances by Yolanda Adams and Ben Folds.

Chelsea Clinton was Saturday's honorary Chair Person. As President, her father signed the bill designating a National Day of Service in partnership with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Hundreds of kids from military families and Washington area public schools are enjoying inauguration weekend in the nation's capital.

The Kids' Inaugural Concert was held Saturday night.

The concert continued a tradition started at the 2009 inauguration by honoring the nation's military families.
