Today in weather history: Mount Lamington erupts in New Guinea

Posted: Updated:

In 1951, a violent volcanic eruption occurred in New Guinea.

The Mount Lamington volcano erupted for the first time in history and began sending steam and smoke into the atmosphere on January 18th.

Three days later the northern side of the mountain was blown away, killing an estimated 3,000 people.

Pyroclastic flows continued for weeks afterward, hampering rescue efforts.

Extreme damage was seen for nearly 7 miles and deaths were reported nearly 9 miles away from the volcano.

The volcano last erupted in 1956.
