A friend and former roommate of murder victim Travis Alexander said he once considered Alexander's accused killer a friend.
Aaron Dewey, who has been featured on several national network shows, sat down with CBS 5 News to give added insight to his former roommate in the only local interview he has given to date.
"It's surreal you know?" Dewey said. "This is the stuff that they make horror movies out of."
He said that never in a million years could he have imagined that someone he was close to, worked with and roomed with would be brutally killed by Jodi Arias, whom he considered a friend.
Arias is on trial, accused of stabbing Alexander 27 times, shooting him in the face and slitting his throat in a macabre murder in the bathroom of his Mesa bathroom in 2008.
The state rested its case against Arias on Thursday and the trial is expected to resume on Jan. 29.
"I liked Jodi, at first," Dewey said. "I thought she, obviously a beautiful woman, she and Travis shared a lot of similar interests."
Dewey said he watched as Alexander converted Arias to his Mormon faith. He saw the two share their ambitions and passion for life. And then, he said, he was witness as things started to unravel.
"There were the issues of jealousy and trust and possessiveness," Dewey said.
Dewey said Alexander grew concerned about Arias searching through his phone, hacking his email account and following him. But the defense team claims Alexander was the one who was controlling and possessive, going so far as to make a T-shirt for Arias that staked his claim to her.
"A lot of people have speculated that she made that shirt for herself," Dewey said.
"We don't know for sure and I don't recall if he actually made it and gave it to her," Dewey said. "To me it doesn't necessarily seem like something that he would do, but it's possible.
Dewey said he never saw a jealous, possessive or controlling side of Alexander.
"I never saw that at all," he said.
Dewey admitted that he has since learned of a side of his friend that he did not know: Alexander's sexual prowess with Arias, including taking X-rated pictures of her the day he was killed.
"We all have our skeletons," Dewey said.
"At the end of the day, Travis was still an amazing guy and he did not deserve what came to him here," Dewey said.
He said he has no doubts that Alexander was murdered and that he was not killed in self-defense.
"I do not believe he was ever physically violent with her," Dewey said."Travis knew when to walk away from an argument, knew when to walk away from a fight. The story that they are going to claim, it just doesn't work."
Dewey said he believes that Arias should be sentenced to death if she is convicted of first-degree murder.
"I think she deserves it," he said.
