Essential tools for every toolbox

Lots of people claim to be handy around the house, but their toolboxes are missing important items that could make their lives easier. Not to worry—our home improvement expert, Dailyn Matthews, reveals three of the tools she can't live without, and why you shouldn't, either.

"A toolbox should have essential tools like a hammer, pliers, screwdriver, wrench. But beyond the basics, I have some favorites that I'd like to share," says Dailyn. "My first one is what I like to call the 'idiot' tape measure. The reason why I call it that is because it has all the measurements marked out so I don't have to count the lines. Makes life so much easier!"

The next item you should have is a caulking tool.

"I use it after I've laid down a bead of caulk in a sink or shower. And you use it to finish off the caulk. Some people like to use their finger, but it's really messy, or a sponge, which tends to pull the caulk up. This thing, however, takes the excess with it, and you walk away with clean fingers," Dailyn adds.

The next tool you may want to have handy is a nail set of three different sizes.

"I use it to finish off a nail that might be sticking out of a piece of wood, like in your baseboard molding. I happen to have old, hardwood floors and the nails pop up from time to time, so you use this along with a hammer, and just a nice little tap, tap sinks the nail into the wood without damaging it," she says.
