HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

A volunteer coach at a high school in Huntersville is scheduled to be in court Friday to face charges he allegedly had an intimate relationship with a student.

Huntersville Police say David Mackenzie Haynes, 24, is charged with three counts of sexual activity with a student and providing a malt beverage to a person less than 21 years of age.

Haynes is the volunteer swim coach at Hopewell High School. Police won't say if the student is on the swim team.

Investigators say CMS Law Enforcement became aware of allegations that Haynes was having sex with the student. They notified Huntersville Police.

Police also said during one of the three encounters, alcohol was provided to the student.

The encounters did not occur on school property or during school sanctioned events.

Haynes is set to be in court on March 8th.
