BBB releases its 2012 'Dirty Dozen' list of worst businesses

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Better Business Bureau has announced its ‘Dirty Dozen' list of area businesses with the most unanswered complaints in 2012.

"This year, there are three businesses on the BBB's 2012 Dirty Dozen list that are what we call ‘repeat offenders' because they were on last year's list, too," said BBB President Tom Bartholomy, "One of these businesses has been on our list three times!"

"When companies don't respond to complaints, they usually don't stay in business very long because consumers are doing their homework and checking businesses out," Bartholomy added. "However, these three contractors have repeatedly changed their business names and are using aliases to make it difficult for consumers to find out about their complaint record."

In 2012, consumers filed 13,142 complaints with the BBB against businesses in the Southern Piedmont area of N.C. and S.C. 

"The majority of businesses in our area work with the BBB to resolve consumer complaints," said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. "Unfortunately though, there are businesses that don't respond to complaints at all."

The 12 businesses with the most unanswered complaints from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012 are:

1. Home Appliance Repair (BBB Grade F) – Gastonia-based Home Appliance Repair tops the BBB's list with 12 unanswered complaints in 2012. Consumers from seven counties in N.C. and S.C. (Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell, Cabarrus, Union,  and York), paid $150 to $927 to Michael David Henderson for appliance repairs that they allege were not done properly, if at all. Since 2000, Michael Henderson has had 26 BBB complaints filed against him under 10 different company names. REPEAT OFFENDER: #1 on 2011 Dirty Dozen List.

"According to complainants, Henderson determined that the broken appliance needed a part, collected the money for the part, but then didn't return to install it," Bartholomy said. "With his frequent business name changes, he is making it difficult for consumers to track him down to obtain a refund."
 
2. Waterford Square Apartments (BBB Grade F) - Nine residents of this Charlotte apartment complex filed complaints with the BBB in 2012, all of which went unanswered by the apartment manager. Since 2001, Waterford Square residents have filed 36 complaints with the BBB, citing maintenance, management and repair issues. 

3. Handyman Company (The) (BBB Grade F) - In 2012, eight homeowners from six counties (Catawba, Burke, Lincoln, Union, Mecklenburg and York) filed complaints with the BBB against Hickory-based Handyman Company. Complaints focus on poor quality work and lack of follow up. Owner Chris Robinson did not respond to any of these complaints. Since 2006, 64 complaints have been filed against James Chris Robinson under five business names, of which 24 complaints have gone unanswered. REPEAT OFFENDER: Robinson was #4 on the 2011 Dirty Dozen List.

4. Historical News Journals (BBB Grade F) – This Cornelius-based company sells old newspapers online at www.historicalnewsjournals.com. In 2012, twenty-five customers filed complaints which focus on order fulfillment and refund issues. Owner Chip Dolfi blamed financial problems caused by employee embezzlement in response to some of the complaints, but he has not answered eight complaints.

5. Carolina Color Solutions (BBB Grade F) – Owned by Todd Engel, Cornelius- based Carolina Color Solutions had eight unanswered complaints in 2012, and 15 total complaints since 2008. Complaints focus on poor quality work and lack of follow up.

6. Southend Car Store (BBB Grade F) – This Charlotte auto repair service has eight unanswered complaints in 2012 and 26 total complaints since 2006. Complainants allege that they were quoted lower prices than what they were charged and that the repairs took longer than projected.

7. Appliance Repair (BBB Grade F) – Benny Hilliard Stafford from Charlotte had five unanswered complaints in 2012 for appliance repairs that were allegedly not done properly, if at all.  Since 2006, Stafford has used 18 business names, 18 telephone numbers, seven aliases and has had 56 total complaints filed with the BBB. DOUBLE REPEAT OFFENDER: He was #2 on the 2011 Dirty Dozen List and #6 on the 2007 Dirty Dozen List.

"This is Benny Stafford's third appearance on the BBB's Dirty Dozen List of the worst rated businesses in the Charlotte area," said Bartholomy. "Given that he has used 18 business names, he has been attempting to avoid his complaint history."

8. Advantage Debt Solutions, Inc. (BBB Grade F) – Charlotte-based Advantage Debt Solutions claims it will settle past-due debts for clients. Owned by Anthony Edward Krysinski, the debt relief service has five unanswered complaints in 2012 and 17 total complaints since 2008. Complainants cite lack of documentation to show how the money they paid to settle their debts was paid towards balances owed and lack of response from the company.

9. Aryca Solutions, LLC (BBB Grade F) – Based in Fort Mill, S.C., Aryca Solutions is a debt collector for online payday lending services. The company had nine complaints filed against it in 2012, of which five complaints are unanswered.  Complainants cite lack of documentation of debt owed or money paid.

10. MZ. Auto Inspections (BBB Grade F) – This auto repair service in Belmont, N.C. has five unanswered complaints in 2012 and seven total complaints since 2010. Complainants allege poor quality work and lack of follow up.

11. Medrano Express (BBB Grade F) – Charlotte-based mailing service, Medrano Express, ships packages and provides wire transfer services to foreign countries. Complaints focus on lengthy shipping times in excess of three months. The company has five unanswered complaints in 2012 and six total complaints.

12. Henry's Auto Service (BBB Grade F) - This Charlotte-based auto repair service has four unanswered complaints in 2012 and six total complaints since 2010. Complainants allege poor quality work and lack of follow up.
