The DMV now admits it accidentally issued 13 driver's licenses to young illegal immigrants whose deportations have been deferred by a new program.
WBTV has been investigating the story since September.
Reporter Sarah Batista brought the issue to the DMV'S attention last Friday, and a spokesperson told WBTV she was unaware of any problem.
"We don't know that people, as you say, have fallen through the cracks, we don't know of any and there are no plans to address that," said Marge Howell, a spokesperson for the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.
On Tuesday, the DMV acknowledged it made a mistake.
Cancellation notices have been sent to all 13 people who mistakenly got licenses using their social security cards and work permits.
The DMV told us it isn't issuing licenses to young people under deferred deportation until the State Attorney General gives an opinion.
Other states have allowed people in the program to obtain a driver's license.
