FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -
A man has been banned from entering all national forests in Arizona after he attempted to illegally cut down a tree in Coconino National Forest.
Coconino National Forest spokesman Brady Smith said David Saimo was caught trying to cut down a 100-year-old Alligator Juniper tree in the Dry Creek area of the Red Rock Ranger District on Jan. 4. When Saimo saw a patrol officer he tried to run, but was arrested after a short struggle with the officer, according to Smith.
Saimo pleaded guilty in Flagstaff's Federal Magistrates Court on Jan. 11 for resisting arrest and illegal woodcutting.
Saimo got a $1,000 fine and two years of unsupervised probation in addition to the forest ban.
