Stepfather charged with child abuse; toddlers found with bruising and broken rib

The Gaston County Police Department is investigating after two toddlers were found with bruising and a broken rib.

27-year-old Jackie Edward Nanney appeared in court Monday. He is charged with 4 counts of Habitual Misdemeanor Assault, 3 counts of Misdemeanor Child Abuse and 1 count of Felony Child Abuse.

Monday, Nanney's bond was increased to $500,000.

Nanney has a prior record, which includes child abuse. He was convicted and served time for shooting a BB gun at children.

Prosecutors say Nanney is a flight risk.

An anonymous tip led officers and workers from the Department of Social Services to perform a welfare check at a home on Walk-a-Long Way in Mt. Holly

Police said during the visit, they found two children with injuries believed to be from abuse. The one and two year old children had bruising on the head, face, legs, and back. The one-year-old also had a broken rib.

Officers arrested Nanney, who they say is married to the children's mother.

In court Monday, the judge and Nanney were shown pictures of the children.

WBTV's crew heard Nanney tell the judge the one-year-old's broken rib came from falling out of the crib.

Nanney also told the judge, "I ain't got the heart to do that, your Honor".

He is scheduled back in court February 5th.

Two other children also live in the home. Officers said the 6 and 10 year old children were not hurt.

The younger children were taken for a medical evaluation, and all children are now in DSS custody, pending an investigation.
