"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
After the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut last month, debate has raged across our country on both gun control and how we deal with mental illness.
People are demanding something be done to prevent this type of unspeakable horror from ever happening again.
As a country, it's obvious we are divided on how to stop this kind of violence against innocents.
As an editorial board, we also had varying opinions.
But at the end of our discussion, we all had the same goal – protecting our children.
It comes down to this: what do we want from our schools right now? And, are we willing to help pay for it?
We would like to see increased security at every school.
Boots on the ground…eyes on the front.
That, of course, means increased costs.
But, we bet many parents would be willing to pay the price for a little more peace of mind.
And, then, as a community, what can we all do to help?
Perhaps it's time to demand Federal funding for security in schools.
Special interests got almost 76 billion dollars in the recent fiscal cliff deal.
Aren't our children just as important as giving tax breaks to Hollywood, rum producers and race track owners?
Do we need to send a lobby of six-year-olds to help Washington get their priorities straight?
Let us know what you think.
We'll share some of your opinions in an upcoming editorial.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
