Gaston Co. tool plant shutting its doors in October


Apex Tool Group announced that its plant in Gaston County will be completely shut down by October.

All 220 employees will be laid off, according to a company spokeswoman.

The company makes a variety of tools and employs 8,000 people worldwide, according to the website.

Apex has facilities across the southeastern U.S., Europe and China.

The company is in the process of being acquired by Boston-based Bain Capital in October of last year for $1.6 billion.

A spokeswoman for the company said that Apex Tool Group is offering impacted employees plant closing severance benefits, which include job transition services such as access to state employment agencies. 

The company is applying for federal retraining assistance benefits for theiremployees, and are working to provide employees appropriate resources to assist them through the transition.
