Another Arizona lawmaker plans to unveil a plan for tighter gun laws and wants to start by making it tougher for people to buy guns in Arizona.

Sen. Linda Lopez will discuss her plan during a 1:30 p.m. news conference Thursday on the lawn of the Arizona Senate building.

Lopez said she would like to see a plan for a universal background check, especially at gun shows periodically pop up in Arizona. She said she would also like to see background checks required in private gun sales.

The Tucson Democrat said she would also like to see a repeal of SB 1241, a bill that requires Arizona law enforcement agencies to sell weapons seized from criminal activity to a licensed gun dealer.

The idea behind the bill is to put seized guns back into commission. Lopez said she feels the legislation goes against other policies that encourage law enforcement agencies to destroy the weapons rather than recirculate them.

The senator also wants a ban on all high-capacity ammunition clips. This would prohibit the sale and possession of any clips that have a capacity of more than 10 rounds. She said she feels it is not necessary for everyday citizens to have access to such a large amount of ammunition.

All of the proposals are following those made by House Minority Leader Chad Campbell, who in addition to a universal background check system, would like to see more money spent towards school resource officers.

Both state lawmakers said they know they will most likely receive opposition from their Republican counterparts, but said they are prepared to fight for their cause.
