Investigators seize weapons, $1.44 million in cash from local home

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office seized approximately $1.44 million dollars from a home in eastern Rowan County Wednesday.

Investigators believed the home contained a large amount of cash, weapons, and drugs. Agents with the Special Investigations Unit and Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant at the home in the High Rock Lake area.

"I don't know hardly know what to think, it hits you pretty hard," said neighbor Roger Dale Driver, Jr.

While searching the home, investigators discovered $1,439,476.28, one assault weapon, three handguns, two set of body armor, ammunition and two vehicles.

The money is believed to be the proceeds from large-scale narcotics trafficking.

"The big difference is, how do you accumulate that much cash legitimately without a business to go with it?" Sheriff Kevin Auten told WBTV.  "And there's other things that point us in that direction. Obviously this is part of an investigation that we won't go through right now that let's us know it's drug money, not a legitimate source of income."

Officers transported the money to a banking institution in Charlotte, where the money was counted and converted into an official check. Federal asset forfeiture of the money is being conducted by Homeland Security.

No one was arrested, but the investigation is ongoing.

Assisting agencies include the United States Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Cornelius Police Department, Huntersville Police Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Pineville Police Department, Mooresville Police Department, and the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.
