Valley braces for sub-freezing cold over weekend

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Enjoy the "warmth" while it lasts, because people will need to break out the heavy coats and long underwear very soon. The Valley of the Sun is about to transform into the Valley of Ice.

The National Weather Service is warning that a pending cold front moving into the Valley beginning as early as Friday morning could provide the longest cold snap in roughly 30 years.

Winds will pick up by Thursday afternoon, blowing clouds and cold air from Canada into Arizona. Though temperatures will reach as high as 70 on Thursday, highs in the low 50s will hit Friday and through the weekend.

Temperatures below freezing are especially concerning Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings, with most of the Valley seeing sub-freezing temperatures and more significant freezes further from the city center.

Some scattered showers are also possible Thursday night and Friday morning.

Highs are not expected to reach the 60s again until mid-week.
