CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Carolina Panthers announced Saturday that Head Coach Ron Rivera has survived the ax and was given the chance for a third season.

Owner Jerry Richardson met with Rivera on Saturday morning and told the coach he was bringing him back.

Richardson who had fired GM Marty Hurney after the teams 1-5 start this year told Rivera he wanted to see the team "trending upward" the rest of the season.

Rivera led the team to a 6-4 record over that span and winning four in a row to close out the season.

Rivera has a 13-19 record with Panthers in his first two seasons.
