A Charlotte man has been arrested after he was involved in a slow-speed chase that resulted in a police officer being injured after crashing into a tree.

According to officials in Matthews, 21-year-old Mark Cornell Hardin was arrested on Friday morning after the pursuit, which occured shortly after midnight.

Two Matthews police officers, who were working a surveillance detail, approached what they called "a suspicious vehicle" that was parked at the Kangaroo Express on E. John Street in Matthews.

As officers approached the 2003 Mazda and identified themselves as police officers the driver of the vehicle sped off in a careless and reckless manner, officials say.

Officers pursued the vehicle in an unmarked vehicle with blue lights and siren activated.

Thats when they say Hardin, who was with another person, drove south on Trade Street, to Fullwood Lane and then onto NC 51.

During this time one of the two suspects in the vehicle threw a gun out of the car's window, police say.

As officers attempted to make a turn onto Beverly Crest Drive the police vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

During the pursuit neither the suspects nor the police were traveling in excess of 65 mph.

Both officers were taken to Matthews Presbyterian Hospital and treated and released for minor injuries.

Police say they later arrested Hardin and the gun has been recovered. Police are still investigating the incident and the second suspect is still being sought.
