Jones, McIntyre spurn party leaders with Speaker votes

WASHINGTON (AP) – North Carolina Congressmen Mike McIntyre (NC7) and Walter B. Jones (NC3) spurned leaders of their parties during Thursday's votes to elect a House Speaker.

Rep. Jones, who represents parts of New Hanover and Pender counties, did not vote for Rep. John Boehner (R-OH). Jones instead cast his ballot for David Walker, the former Comptroller General of the United States. According to Jones' office, Walker also served as President Ronald Reagan's Assistant Secretary of Labor, and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

"America cannot afford to continue down the path we're on," Rep. Jones said in a news release. "The debt is strangling this nation.  I know Speaker Boehner has done the best he could, but this House of Representatives was elected to stop the spending, and time and again, opportunities have been missed.  David Walker is a man who I believe would do what needs to be done to save America: stand up to President Obama, cut the deficit and balance the budget."

Boehner was relected as Speaker, getting 220 votes.

McIntyre is one of two House Democrats who voted for Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) for Speaker, not Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).  "Congressman Jim Cooper is common-sense fellow Blue Dog legislator who is an expert in the budget and fiscal issues facing our nation," McIntyre said in an e-mail to WECT requesting a comment. "He would bring a renewed emphasis to help Congress balance the budget and begin paying down our nation's debt.  In addition, he is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a fellow Morehead Scholar."

In past re-election campaigns, McIntyre's opponents have criticized his votes for Pelosi as Speaker.

The elections came as the 113th Congress was sworn in on Capitol Hill.

After walking out of a committee meeting Monday discussing funds for victims of Hurricane Matthew, Rep. Brenden Jones (R-Columbus) says he did not get the answers to his questions. “To be honest with you, we saw a lot of pretty charts and a lot of pretty graphs, but we still have no answers,” Rep Jones said about the meeting of the House Select Committee on Disaster Relief.
