Charlotte officer arrested for driving drunk on NYE, officials say

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer was arrested Monday for driving while impaired in Union County, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Officer Matthew L. Thompson, 44, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center, canceled/revoked/suspended certificate/tag, and operating a vehicle with no insurance.

According to NCHP, Thompson blew a .19 on the breathalyzer, and was booked into the Union County Jail.

CMPD confirmed to WBTV that Thompson was hired by the department in March of 1990, and is currently assigned to the Freedom Division.

Thompson has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, officials said.
