NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – Police showed
off some of the guns and marijuana seized from a southern Indiana man accused
of trying to choke his grandson.
Police made the discovery early Sunday
morning at the home of James Ross, 56, of New Albany.
Officers were called to Ross's home on
Gap Hallow Road after a 14-year-old boy alerted relatives that Ross had choked
him and that he feared for his life. The teen lived with Ross, who is his
grandfather.
Police said they were aware Ross had
several guns, so they called in the SWAT team just to be safe.
"A 50 caliber rifle is accurate up to
a mile in range," said Detective Major Jeff Topping with Floyd County Criminal
Investigations, "so, I mean, think of how far that could go to take somebody
out. It had a scope on it, which, you know, it isn't just for target practice.
I don't know what he was doing with it or what made him possess it."
Investigators said there were about 40
firearms and five pounds of marijuana inside Ross's home.
Ross is out on bond. He faces several
charges including marijuana possession, battery and strangulation.
