Use space heaters safely

As the temperatures continue to dip, more people are using space heaters.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states an estimated 900 portable heater fires are reported each year in residential buildings. Those fires cause an estimated 70 deaths, 150 injuries, and $53 million in property losses.

Portable heater fires peak in January.

The Huntersville Fire Department put together a list of advice to safely use space heaters:

  • Turn heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room
  • Portable heaters should be kept at least 3 feet from all combustible material
  • Do not use space heaters in areas frequented by small children
  • Keep heaters away from exit ways, walkways, and paths of travel
