Holiday break ideas - | WBTV Charlotte

Need to keep the kids busy during the holiday break?

Most children view the Christmas holiday as a needed break from school but many parents find this to be a really stressful time.

No fear, the Schiele Museum of Natural History is offering up a variety of activities.

It's a place offering up a slice of history where you can get up close to cowboys in the Wild West.

"We talk about the cowboys that came from Florida and we talk about the cowboys that came from South America," says Assistant Director of the Schiele Museum of Natural History Karl McKinnin.

There are also a few animals you can't fit a lasso around.

"When you walk in our front door you're greeted giant T-Rex," says McKinnon.

And you can also check out animals you would see in your own back yard.

McKinnon says the museum in Gastonia is gearing up for a big rush of holiday break visitors.

"We are expecting a number of folk that are going to be having cabin fever from being cooped up during the holidays," says McKinnon.

Most kids get the biggest kick out of the live animals and cowboy display.

Here, you can step back into time and see what life was like on the frontier.

And for parents who are home with their children over the holidays the museum offers other ways to keep the whole family entertained.

"We have a variety of shows that will meet everybody's needs everything from small children to adults," says Mckinnon.

You can get a glimpse into a much simpler time.

The cowboy display will only be up until the end of the week.

Starting January there will be no charge to go to the museum on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
