Denver Fire Department comes to the rescue for Christmas

Sometimes it takes a little work to make Christmas magic happen. When it does, it's the greatest gift to everyone involved.

Volunteers at the Denver Fire Department know that to be true. They teamed up with Toys for Tots to provide gifts for hundreds of local children.

The toys were picked up by the families or delivered to their homes Christmas Eve.

Chief Jay Flynn was one of Santa's biggest helpers. "I'm the head elf. I guess you can tell by my hat," he joked, wearing a red and green festive number.

It was quite an operation to gather the toys and organize volunteers. The effort was well worth it, based on the smiles on children's faces.

"Whoa!" said Trey Kirkland, pulling out a box of toy cars. The four-year-old and his sister had an even bigger surprise waiting for them: brand new bikes.

Their father said it was ironic that this year they had to ask for help. Typically, the family helps provide donations for toy drives like this one, said Lawrence Kirkland.

"It's my first time and a blessing from the skies," said Kim Shumake, who received gifts for her children.

It's not easy for the parents or guardians to sit in a chair and wait for their name to be called, but there was a look of joy and relief on their faces after the gifts were given.

Chief Flynn said the need grows every year and they are thankful to members of the community who helped.
