Troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol are saturating area roads this year end holiday - hoping to stop a repeat of last year.
According to AAA, 56 people died in crashes on roads across the state between December 22 last year and New Year Day. 17 of those fatalities happened on roads the state Highway Patrol works.
Trooper Jerry Noland says "our goal is to not have any fatalities and make sure everybody is driving the way they're supposed to be. If we can prevent one is our goal. To have none is our goal".
Trooper Noland says speeding and alcohol accounted for most of the crashes.
"You have people going to Christmas parties - there's alcohol there. Also more people going to malls and doing shopping", says Trooper Noland.
Troopers say they'll be watching "to make sure people are focused on driving, paying attention, not distracted and that they're observing speed limits".
