Rain began falling in the North Carolina Mountains just after lunchtime on Thursday as the front that will bring major weather changes to the area moved in.
WBTV talked with people in Blowing Rock, who were preparing for possible snow.
Department of Transportation Highway crews were have been on call since the rain and cold temperatures began. As those crews tackle the roads on Friday morning, at least one ski resort, Sugar Mountain, hopes to reopen.
The resort has been closed this week because temperatures have been too warm to maintain snow on the slopes.
Forecasters expect cold weather to continue for several days. Snow making at the resorts will be in full swing. Merchants say it will help the local economy which has been struggling lately because of the warm weather.
The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is one of the most important for tourist related businesses all year.
