PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Gilbert man convicted of carjacking several vehicles while naked, and causing crashes that injured seven people in Scottsdale has been sentenced to eight years in prison, as part of a plea deal.

Court officials said Judge Karen Mullins also sentenced John Brigham to five years probation for robbery, car theft, aggravated assault and three counts of endangerment.

In January, 45-year-old John Brigham of Gilbert entered a guilty plea, then withdrew his plea, and later agreed to a plea deal.

Scottsdale police took Brigham, who is a former real estate agent and high school teacher, to a hospital for an evaluation after the June 29 incident, and a toxicology test showed he had the drug PCP in his system. [WATCH: Naked man charged with stealing a car caught on tape] Friday, Brigham admitted he had taken bath salts.

"I was sure that I was about to be murdered, and I ran out of my apartment without even closing the door. I got into my Toyota Prius to escape from the demons I though were close behind me, and closing in," said Brigham.

Witnesses said the carjacker exited a vehicle, after the first crash in the 8900 block of East Shea, took off his clothes and stole another vehicle.

Witnesses said they also observed him climbing on top of the roof of one of the vehicles, and chanting unknown statements.

Just before he was arrested, witnesses said they saw Brigham try to forcibly enter three other vehicles that were stopped on Shea.

Police said seven people were injured in the second crash, including a woman who was eight months pregnant. She suffered two broken legs.

"I'm just really glad that nobody was killed. I'm so sorry to the people, and I'm not saying that because I'm in trouble. I'm saying that because I really mean it," said Brigham, addressing his victims.

Here's a revolutionary thought: The Carolina Panthers should invest in their secondary. And not with mid- to late-round picks or development projects, either. On April 26, the first night of the 2018 NFL Draft, Carolina should take a defensive back at No. 24. A day-one starter. A leader.
