CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Just as the budget process gets started within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, security has a higher place on the agenda following the Sandy Hook massacre.
CMS leaders say district officials are met Tuesday to discuss what changes, if any, need to be made to make schools more safe.
Monday, Dr. Heath Morrison discussed the possibility of changing the visitors policy, hiring more school resource officers, using metal detectors, and single-entry buzz-in systems.
The changes would cost money. School metal detectors can cost several thousand dollars each and hiring a new SRO's can cost $80,000.
Morrison said there is no easy fix. Some security measures might work better at some schools with mobile classrooms and open campuses, compared to a school that has one main classroom building.
County Commissioner George Dunlap says more study needs to be done on the security issue. He says it will certainly be a budget consideration.
