MOM-O holding vigil for Newtown, CT victims

Charlotte-based Mothers of Murdered Offspring (MOM-O) is calling for a nationwide evening of mourning for the 28 victims of the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy.

Mothers of Murdered Offspring's Cabarrus County chapter has chosen Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. to remember the 20 children and 8 adults who became victims of Friday's massacre. The event will be held in Downtown Concord.

The group invites the public to gather in the open area next to Concord Police Headquarters, located at the corner of Cabarrus Avenue W and Market Street SW, to light candles and share feelings about the individual effects of this nightmare.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they can see the outpouring of love and support for the families of the victims. The organization hopes they see that together, we are a strong nation capable of protecting them. All attendees are asked to bring their own white candle to light during the service.

Program highlights include:

• Welcome from Concord Mayor Scott Padgett
• Prayers from local ministers
• Remarks from Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Midland, and Mount Pleasant elected officials
• Background of the Mothers of Murdered Offspring organization – Sally Coleman
• Release of green and white balloons to remember the Sandy Hook Elementary victims
• Candle-lighting ceremony and playing of Shirley Murdock's "Celebrate My Life"
