Happening today: Funerals for Newtown school shooting victims

It's Monday, December 17. This is Christine Nelson writing this quick email to you from my desk. Here is a look at the stories we're covering on WBTV News This Morning. We're on from 4:30-7:00 a.m. Tune in to get all the details to these stories and more:

TODAY: The first set of funerals will be happening for some of the victims who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It will also be the first day back for many schools in our area since the deadly shooting. Does what happened in Newtown constitute adding security to local schools? We reached out to a couple school districts in our area to get more on their plan of action. WBTV's Cam Man Ron Lee will be live with the details.

A family living in Charlotte just moved to this area from Newtown, Connecticut. They're going back to their hometown today to show their support to friends affected by the mass shooting. We got a chance to talk to them before they leave.

This unspeakable tragedy has re-energized the conversation about gun control laws. Many elected officials took to the Sunday morning political shows to talk about what the next plan of action should be. We'll tell you what they said should happen moving forward.

Other stories making headlines include:

*Two officers killed in Kansas. Shooter still on the run.

*Questions around fire in Statesville that killed a 9-year-old.

*Some movement in fiscal cliff negotiations.

See you on the air!

Christine
