New traffic pattern on I-85 near Concord Mills

Beginning Friday night, there will be a new traffic pattern on part of I-85 North.

According to the NCDOT, northbound traffic on a seven-mile stretch of the interstate will shift to new lanes beginning at 9pm Friday. The stretch of road starts at Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49) and ends at Poplar Tent Road (Exit 52).

The DOT is in the process of widening I-85 to eight lanes from south of Bruton Smith Boulevard/Concord Mills Boulevard to north of N.C. 73 in Cabarrus County.

In the meantime, some shoppers are avoiding the popular shopping destination, Concord Mills, because of the traffic headache on I-85.

Maura Alexander works at a store inside Concord Mills.

"We actually have a lot of customers that come in the store and they're like, 'I don't even know why I come up here,'" said Alexander.

She's looking forward to the end of the construction process and thinks it'll bring even more shoppers to the already busy shopping mall.

"I think if they can get up here easier and not have to sit in traffic so long, they will come up here," said Alexander.

The widening project is scheduled to be finished in November, 2013.
