Lynden, WA (PRWEB) December 14, 2012
Days for Girls International has been declared a Nike Girl Effect Champion for 2013. Winners of the Girl Effect Challenge receive funding, endorsement, and important Girl Effect publicity. Each year they select 12 organizations that make a significant impact in unlocking the untapped potential of adolescent girls living in poverty.
Days for Girls International empowers girls, women and communities in 29 nations on 5 continents, reversing the cycle of poverty in a simple, direct, effective and surprising way: Helping women have access to sustainable feminine hygiene. One of the major causes of disempowerment of girls in developing countries is their monthly cycle. Many girls cannot afford feminine hygiene products and as a result cannot attend school. A girl absent from school due to menstruation for 4 days of every 28 day cycle loses 13 learning days, the equivalent of two weeks of learning every school term. Studies show that every year of schooling increasing a girl's future earning power by 10 to 20 percent, allowing her to break the cycle of poverty. There are millions of girls and women worldwide who suffer days of isolation, infection, and exploitation due to this single issue. With attention to collaboration, and responsiveness to local feedback Days for Girls tackles large systemic challenges with a simple solution that is turning out to be key to social changes.
Nike Foundation's Girl Effect video "The Clock is Ticking" went viral in 2011 and the momentum continues. The girl effect is a movement. It's about leveraging the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves, their families, their communities, their countries and the world. It's about making girls visible and changing their social and economic dynamics by providing them with specific, powerful and relevant resources. Created by the Nike Foundation in collaboration with the NoVo Foundation, United Nations Foundation and Coalition for Adolescent Girls, the girl effect is fuelled by hundreds of thousands of girl champions who recognise the untapped potential of adolescent girls living in poverty.
