CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A man pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Sharrandon Adams, 32, was sentenced to 59 to 83 months in prison after the plea in Mecklenburg Superior Court, the report states.

On May 5, Adams and his girlfriend, Emanee Womack, 33, were arguing at a relative's cookout. Adams pushed Womack, who fell and hit her head. Later, at another relative's home, he pushed her again. She fell and asked for help before becoming unresponsive, the District Attorney said.

When Womack became unresponsive, Adams called 911. He initially lied to first responders by telling them that Womack's symptoms were due to her taking pain medication. Doctors began treating her for an overdose before realizing that she did not have the proper symptoms and saw bruising on her arms, officials told WBTV.

Womack was pronounced dead at an area hospital the next day as a result of a blunt trauma head injury.
