WBTV Speak Out Editorial: CMS: From Good to Great

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

"Every child...Every day...For a better tomorrow..."

That's the theme new Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Superintendent, Dr. Heath Morrison, has created.

He talked about it as he recently unveiled his plan to transform CMS into a great school system.

We find his plan to be bold, courageous, and ambitious.

He wants to close the achievement gap, create an electronic portfolio for each student, establish an office of diversity, strengthen public trust, and do much more.

Sounds pretty good on paper, but can it really happen?

Well Morrison has now set up 22 different task forces to figure out how to make his plan a reality.

Now good luck with that.

In the past we have seen task forces come and go in CMS.

In fact, some of the recommendations they made are still collecting dust on a shelf somewhere.

We hope this time around these 22 committees will get the job done, and offer specifics on how to truly create a better tomorrow for every student.

It's good to have a plan, but at some point the plan has to become action.

That's why we encourage you to hold the new Superintendent and those 22 task forces accountable.

Let them know you are eagerly waiting every day for that "better tomorrow for every child."

And remind them it shouldn't take forever to make it happen.
