New plan for old Knights stadium in the works

As road construction begins on the new Knights stadium in Charlotte, officials in York County are crafting their own plan to fill the baseball gap.

"We've been working on this project since I got here," said York County Manager Jim Baker. He's been with the County more than five years.

They knew the Knights would leave Fort Mill at some point. Now they're having to re-think the possibilities. From fly balls to a fashion retailer.

Cato Corporation promises a whole new ball game, according to Baker.

"There's not a lot of opportunities this close to the Charlotte metropolitan area. It's right off Interstate 77. So it's the type of area you really want to ask, is that the most productive use?"

Cato wants to build a distribution center, according to Baker. County papers show the project promises a 36-million dollar investment and 130 jobs.

The idea of a big industrial box doesn't appeal to some people. A small group of concerned neighbors spoke up at one of several public hearings planned.

Some neighbors support recreational fields for lacrosse and soccer.

The current project doesn't specifically include recreational space, but Baker doesn't rule it out in this project or another one somewhere else.

A site plan has not been submitted, but the project does include more than just a distribution center. It would pull together more 300 acres including the ballpark and land around it for a mixed-use development, including office space.

The County owns about 30 acres. The rest of the land fell into bankruptcy and is being handled through court.

Cato is still awaiting a decision from bankruptcy court, which could come down before the end of the year.
