CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Tuition and fees will be on the rise again at UNC Charlotte as the Board of Trustees unanimously voted for a rate hike to take effect for the 2013-14 school year.

The $232 increase per student is a 3.9% hike bringing the total cost for undergraduate in-state students to $6,105 annually.

The college which bolsters the third highest enrollment in the UNC system says it needs the extra revenue for things like campus repairs and renovations as well as helping fund the University's new Football program.

UNCC Chancellor Philip Dubois told the Board of Trustees that the effects of the recession can be seen in the financial challenges facing students.

Dubois said the administration would in turn re-direct some of the tuition revenues to on-campus employment, internship opportunities and Summer research programs for students, according to a news release from the university.

"With so many of our students having to work to make ends meet, we think employment on campus is a positive option," Dubois said in the release.

The proposed increases require final approval by the UNC Board of Governors and the state legislature.
