Officials excited about the Belk Bowl

Belk Bowl officials say they are approaching 50 thousand tickets sold. And they add people are still buying tickets. They want to see the football teams from Duke University and the University of Cincinnati battle it out at Bank of America stadium for the Belk Bowl.

The Belk Bowl is the first college bowl to call the Carolinas home. Belk is known for fashion but now it is known for football. Organizers say Belk's theme is Modern Style Fashion.

And they say football fits with that message.

"College football if you think about it," Executive Director of Charlotte Collegiate Football Will Webb said. "Is modern - two great games in America, NFL and college football. It's southern and Belk's is certainly Southern. And Style, you look at everything that we are doing with our giving back in the community, our lady Antebellum concert before the game - this is a great way to express that."

For the first time Belk gave away $25,000 each to three Charlotte Mecklenburg schools. Students had to decorate a school rock or bulletin board. It had to showcase technology and sports.

The winning schools were Hopewell High school, Quail Hollow Middle, and Reedy Creek Elementary. Both teachers and staff got a ticket to the game.

While many are excited about the Belk Bowl, officials are also concerned about safety. The last college football game played at Bank of America Stadium, a fan fell from the upper level and was sent to the hospital.

Belk Bowl officials say they will work with stadium crews to determine what needs to be done for the Bowl to keep fans safe.
