A food pantry volunteer was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after a van rolled on top of him.

It happened near the intersection of McPherson Avenue and Van Street just before 11 a.m.

Police say two men were making a food delivery for Manna Outreach when the van slipped out of gear, pinning James Graham, 76, underneath.

"It rolled over him. It did try to stop and by that time the back wheels were on top of him," said Mary Beasley, who witnessed the accident. "When they pushed the truck out of the way they kind of pulled him out but they had to be careful because they didn't know what type of injuries he had. He was just in agony." The van rolled and came to a stop on Graham's chest.

"He's a volunteer, you know, that just shouldn't happen." said Manna Outreach Food Pantry volunteer coordinator, Mary Lou Zeek. "...He is always in such a good mood."

A group of bystanders lifted the van off of Graham and pulled him out from underneath.

Graham was taken to University Hospital and was listed in critical condition as of 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
