SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -
A Surprise man who was arrested on suspicion of aggravated DUI and child endangerment had intended to drive 40 miles across the Valley with his 4-year-old child in the car, police said.
At the time of his arrest, Eric Goldwine, 33, was set to appear Dec. 11 at a Department of Motor Vehicles hearing for a prior DUI in August, Surprise police officers said.
Police dispatchers received a call from his wife Saturday night informing them Eric Goldwine may be intoxicated and en route from Surprise to pick her up at work in Scottsdale, investigators said. Police said she feared their 4-year-old son Tyler was in the vehicle.
A Surprise police officer saw a car fitting the description of the one provided by the man's wife, observed one of the headlights wasn't working properly and conducted a traffic stop about one block from Goldwine's home.
The officer said he observed the motorist had bloodshot and watery eyes and was slurring his speech, according to court paperwork. The officer conducted field sobriety tests. Goldwine submitted to a breath test which indicated a 0.200 percent BAC, the court document said.
After he was placed under arrest, police said Goldwine admitted to drinking Vodka. He confirmed he was driving to Scottsdale with his child to pick up his wife from work, police said.
In his probable cause statement, the officer wrote, "I believe the subject recklessly placed his 4-year-old child in a situate where the person or health of the child was in danger of serious physical injury and/or death."
