The General Manager of the Boone County Water District pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to abuse of public trust.
Phil Trzop, who is also Walton's mayor, is accused of keeping cash from the sale of scrap metal.
It was originally believed that Trzop used the cash to give Christmas bonuses to employees. However, further investigation revealed that Trzop had the money at his house.
Abuse of public trust is a Class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in the state penitentiary.
Trzop is out of jail on bond. The case will now move to the grand jury.
