CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) -
The new student enrollment period ends Dec. 7. CMS began taking applications for the 2013-14 school year on Oct. 5.
To participate in the first student-assignment lottery next spring, students must enroll by Dec. 7. Families who plan to send their child to their assigned home school do not have to register by Dec. 7, but are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible.
Parents should enroll children who are entering pre-kindergarten in 2013-2014, starting kindergarten in 2013-2014 and did not attend a CMS pre-kindergarten program, or older students who will be new to CMS.
Students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2013. Students must be 4 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2013, to be considered for pre-kindergarten.
In order to enroll students in CMS, families must provide three documents to show proof of residency. There are three categories of acceptable documents; parents must submit one document from each category.
The three categories of acceptable documents are:
A copy of a lease or a record of the most recent mortgage statement
A utility bill dated within the past 30 days
A valid driver's license or vehicle tax bill
Per North Carolina law, parents must fill out a Safe Schools Enrollment Declaration. The declaration requests information about suspensions, expulsions and felony convictions.
In addition to these forms, parents must also provide a certified birth certificate (with seal) and a copy of the student's current immunization record.
Student-enrollment forms are available on the CMS website, at any school, zone office or the Smith Family Center (1600 Tyvola Road). For more information, please call the student placement office at 980-343-5335 or email email@example.com.
