A Charlotte man accused of killing his girlfriend has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Prosecutors say a judge decided last week that 30-year-old Davon Lamont Thomas would be committed indefinitely to a state mental hospital.
Thomas' attorney has said the Iraq war veteran suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and thought the woman was part of a terrorist attack on America.
Twenty-three-year-old Tigist Yemane was shot to death at Thomas' parents' home in November 2009. Police say the woman had originally come to Charlotte from Ethiopia for a heart operation.
Prosecutors said forensic psychologists for both the defense and prosecution testified during an October hearing that Thomas suffered from severe mental illness and lacked the capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions.
