Suspects using Lynx rail as escape route

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Local authorities are trying to figure out why suspects have been using the Lynx light rail as an escape route after committing crimes.

Police responded to the second light rail escape attempt Thursday evening.

CMPD officers are asking for the public's help in identifying a man they arrested Thursday in connection with a bank robbery.

Police say they man robbed the Wells Fargo bank at 2910 South Boulevard around 4:41 p.m.

Officers boarded the nearby light rail train at New Bern Station and located the suspect on the train and arrested him.

Money and a handgun were found on the suspect. However, police have been unable to confirm the identity of the man.

Last month, two men were caught riding the light rail, after police say they shot and killed a man during a robbery.

"You'd think they'd learn by now because the last place you want to be is on a train with the police officers and surveillance cameras," said John Trunk, head of security for the light rail.

WBTV spoke to passengers who say despite the recent events, they feel safe riding the train.

"You'll frequently see cops at stations or security people. I feel very safe," said Tim Valdes.

Trunk said CATS has security personnel watching inside the train cars and outside at the stations 24 hours a day.
