Attorneys for an Arizona death-row inmate have filed a second appeal asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block his scheduled execution Wednesday.
The new appeal argues it would violate Richard Dale Stokley's constitutional rights to be executed when a second man with equal or greater responsibility for the same crimes was only sentenced to prison and already is a free man.
Another appeal filed earlier Friday argues that lower courts unfairly denied Stokley a hearing on potential evidence for possible leniency in sentencing.
Stokley was sentenced to death for the 1991 killings of two 13-year-old girls in rural Cochise County.
