CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
The Charlotte Area Transit System continued to celebrate its five-year anniversary of the LYNX Blue Line light rail by congratulating the 24,440,385 customer this morning at the Charlotte Transportation Center/Arena station.
The lucky winner was Tony McNeal, Jr. who was greeted by Carolyn Flowers as he exited the train. McNeal received an annual light rail pass and a Kindle e-reader.
"This award shows that I am a valued customer and I really appreciate that," said McNeal who considers riding the train as a phenomenal opportunity to arrive to work on time and avoid traffic and parking. "Congratulations to Mr. McNeal for contributing to the success of the LYNX light rail," said CATS CEO Carolyn Flowers. "We look forward to even more accomplishments with the completion of the Blue Line Extension, which will provide a one-seat cross county ride and consistent travel time for our customers."
This week marks the five-year anniversary of the CATS' LYNX Blue Line. The award for today's special rider culminates a month long celebration.
Activities included essay contests on the CATS Facebook page about using LYNX light rail and radio remotes with treats at select light rail stations.
Since the LYNX Blue Line opened in November 2007, daily weekday ridership has averaged approximately 15,000 riders. Development along the south corridor of the light rail line is about $1.4 billion.
