Cyber Monday finds a big audience in social media

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - For the Cyber Monday shoppers who didn't sneak some deals while at work today, they're about to get very busy.

While many Cyber Monday shoppers admit to checking out deals while at work, experts believe the shopping will continue well into the night. And social media is playing a big role.

More merchants are using the one tool most of us have, a smart phone, to push their deals throughout the day, and that means reaching out to customers via email alerts and text messages, through apps, facebook and twitter.

Several big department stores are using facebook and twitter to get their deals in front people who've already shown an interest in their products by 'liking' them facebook or 'following' them twitter.  It's less expensive than advertising! Nordstrom, for example, is sending out tweets all day long pushing some of their big Cyber Monday specials.

Many of the web sites dedicated to price checking have their own twitter accounts and are keeping followers up on where the best deals can be had during this monster e-commerce event. If you use to compare prices, check out their twitter feed, their handle is @pricegrabber. and are chirping about some of the deals this Cyber Monday.  You can follow them @retailmenot and @couponcabin.

If you are shopping online, please be careful.  The FBI warns that you shop from online site you know are legit.  One common trap are 'one-day only' web sites.  Shop with the stores you're familiar with.  Also, if you see gift card offers on sites like facebook, can be a way to get into your social media account.  So open another page and go to that company's site.
