Boy, 7, dies in Rowan County ATV accident

A young boy was killed Thursday after an ATV he was riding rolled over, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. near the boy's home on Country Hill Drive in Rowan County.

Witnesses told police that two boys, a 7-year-old and an 11-year-old, were riding an Arctic CAT 550 ATV for most of the day Thursday, and had recently finished eating lunch before going back out on the ATV in the afternoon.

Witnesses went on to tell police that the boys were riding the ATV at a high rate of speed when the vehicle rolled over during an attempted turn.

The 7-year-old, who was reported by the witnesses to be driving the vehicle, was killed in the accident, deputies said.

The other boy was in the passenger seat at the time of the accident. He was flown to Baptist Hospital to be treated for serious injuries, the report states.

The children's names have not been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
